Terelj Valley & Baruun Bayn Gol Valley Horse Trek Itinerary
We leave Ulaanbaatar early in the morning and head to the famous Chinggis Khan statue, where you can learn about Mongolia’s history. After visiting the statue, we continue to Terelj National Park. Here, you'll see the famous Turtle Rock and visit the peaceful Aryapala Monastery. We’ll cross the Terelj River and spend the night in a traditional Ger (yurt), giving you a taste of Mongolian life.
After an early lunch, we ride through rural areas for about an hour, then climb our first pass. We stop at the top for a rest and enjoy the view. We then descend into Terelj Valley, where we camp near the river or in a nearby tributary valley.
Today, we ride over two forested passes, stopping for a lunch break in a grassy area near a creek. In the afternoon, we ride through a wide, open valley where herders store hay for winter. We may pass herds of livestock. By late afternoon, we reach the Tuul Valley and ride into the Baruun Bayn Gol Valley, where we camp in heated gers alongside other herders.
We ride up to the high ridges east of our camp. Along the way, we pass ancient burial sites and ride through granite rock formations with great views of the valley below. After a lunch break, we loop back down through a valley and return to camp.
We ride north up the Baruun Bayn Gol Valley, heading towards the Baga Khentii Mountains. After crossing a river, we stop to admire spectacular rock formations. We continue north, visiting a Buddhist Stupa and Ovoo, where we take in panoramic views. After lunch in a canyon, we return to camp.
Today, we ride over a small pass into the Tuul River valley. After a break by the river, we follow it upstream and pass beautiful cottonwood trees. We have a picnic lunch along the river, then ride back toward camp, crossing another pass on the way.
We ride west from camp, passing winter camps and entering a forest trail. The trail leads uphill to a lookout point with views of the valley we came from. After lunch, we ride back down through the forest and follow the trail back to camp.
On the return ride, some guests will head back to the city, while others continue riding. We ride down the Baruun Bayn Gol Valley, cross a pass, and enter Terelj Valley. After a final break near the Terelj River, we camp for the night in tents.
We ride through open grasslands and cross the Terelj River three times. After lunch near the last crossing, we ride up the final pass of our journey. It’s a short ride back to our staging area in Darkhid Valley. After a final break, we head back to the city, with the drive taking about 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
